The Birthday - March/SUGA

Hey Guys! It's finally March and you know who owns it! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
That's right! Min Yoongi! The Sarcastic Suga. Our lil meow. Our kitten. The soul-partner to our sunshine.

SUGA has even in his pre debut times, been a person who writes powerful lyrics and much more powerful beats. He is a songwriter and also produces songs for his group’s albums. He recently collaborated with the amazing vocalist Lee Sora called 신청곡 Song Request and his long time inspiration and one of the famous hip-hop group, Epik High called (새벽에) Eternal Sunshine

In Min Yoongi’s birthday month, here are a few songs which display Yoongi as a spectacular lyricist, penning down thoughts buried deep inside an individual's mind. Yoongi, also known as Agust D (If spelled backwards, it's Daegu Town, SUGA - A clever trick of letters), has been extremely vocal about his own mental health issues, about depression and social anxiety. By writing about the struggles he faced and still at times faces, the songs pave a path to connect itself to the audience.

BTS attended The Ellen Show in 2017 after the success of Love Yourself: Her. In the interview, Yoongi said that even though the language is Korean, the issues BTS talks about [in their songs] are universal and that’s what helps them connect to the ARMY and vice versa.

It’s difficult to choose 3 songs that best signify his skills, but here we go! In no particular order, of course! 💜

So Far Away (2016) [Album: Agust D]

The song addresses problems such as not having a dream, living a baseless life, the unsure feeling of where our own-self is headed, and one’s way of isolating themselves. It gives an inside look into the mind of a person who, others may think is procrastinating, but is actually just depressed and demotivated. One might see lots of healthy discussion regarding depression and anxiety on Instagram or Twitter and also many people spreading awareness about the symptoms of such mental issues. Suga's So Far Away expresses things that people do not seem comfortable to talk about in the open. The chorus is as soothing as a lullaby, slowly lifting the listener’s spirits up by saying –
Dream, May your trials end in full bloom
Dream, Though your beginnings may be humble, may the end be prosperous

However, the lyrics that absolutely pierce the heart is –
Everyone else is running why am I the only one here?
I want to disappear like a mirage, want to disappear, I want my damn self to disappear

The Last (2016) [Album: Agust D]

In the mixtape, The Last in the seventh song in the tracklist and takes the listeners through his personal journey from being a trainee to a world-wide idol. This song paints a picture of the hurdles of being an idol trainee in South Korea, which the internet has already "educated" people a lot about.

It's been a long time since my everyday life became killing my passions and comparing myself with others

With one single line, he attacked the idol/trainee system which scout talents as young as 12-13 year old boys or girls and gives them rigorous training in order to become an idol -

As times passes by, it feels like I'm becoming a monster
My monster named success that I traded my youth for, he wants a bigger wealth

The moment the song ventures in it's last set of verses, the powerful build-up of music and him talking about his success hits quite hard to the listener -

The taste of performing in front of only two people, now Tokyo Dome is in front of my nose
From Seiko to Rolex
From AX Hall to the Gymnastics Stadium
 He even says,
The things that corrupted my essence are numerous
My address is idol I won't be corrupted

DDaeng (2018) [A rapper sub-unit song]
Being a rapper in the most famous KPop group BTS, the rap unit (the three rappers in the seven member band) frequently come up with awesome diss tracks to the people hating on the group. Every rapper writes his own lyircs for their own parts and whereas Ddaeng as a whole is a complete masterpiece, Suga's rap in the song takes the diss mingled with his sarcasm a notch higher.

Ddaeng means wrong and he starts off his verse with -
From my perspective, you're ddaeng

Then proceeds to rap -
Billboard is all thanks to you bae
No one else is above us

For his solo song, Trivia: Seesaw in their latest album Love Yourself: Answer, Yoongi wrote the lyrics in just 30 minutes. The song has a catchy tune and alliterated lyrics which makes people love the song. On first hearing it, it may seem like a pop song but the lyrics suggest otherwise - it's a breakup song. But that's just one of the talents of the genius Min Yoongi.

These are some of the reasons I love Yoongi wholeheartedly. What's yours?

What song of Yoongi do you feel connected to the most?
Also, the reason Yoongi is my bias is because I'm sarcastic. What's your reason of loving Yoongi?
